Health Care's Historic Moment – Timothy Egan Blog – NYTimes.com
This happened 44 years ago, with the creation of Medicare, the socialized health care plan for the elderly. At the time, the poorest Americans were more often the oldest Americans. And half of all seniors had no health care coverage. ….. The money got diverted from providing medical care. It went to CEO salaries, stockholder profits, denial-of-benefits bureaucracy, lobbying expenses, and marketing costs instead. The current system is just a giveaway to those guys. … read more…

Resolved Question: In a relationship for a year…just a poll?
this question is for ADULTS in a relationship…NOT married couples. Please answer honestly.
There are stipulations to this question.
1. One person has 2 kids while the other has none.
2. Both work full time day jobs from 6am to 3pm.
3. One works in the medical field taking care of the elderly in a nursing home and the other in a distribution center receiving dock
4. The one without kids lives at home with mom and dad while the other has a house.
5. They DO NOT live together but spend anywhere from 3-5 nights together.
6. One is 32 yrs old and the other is 34 yrs old.
Now..with all this knowing…how often are they having sex? Not how often do they want it but how often are they actually having it? Or should be having it… Wanting and getting are 2 different things. What would be considered normal? 1-2 times a week, 3-4 times a week, 1-2 times a month or what? Also…can you figure out who is who? Who has kids, who is 34, who lives at home, where each person works? And who wants sex more often than the other? This should be fun…

Resolved Question: I need advice on an ailing horse with Founder?
Hey everyone. I know this isn’t quite the place for discussion, but I need advice.
I have been recently hired to feed and water an elderly gentleman’s horse. I am a student of biology and have experience with animals and in the medical profession, so I’d like only serious answers.
The horse I am caring for is a roughly 20 year old gelding, and I’d say he’s a quarterhorse. He’s being fed about 3 lbs each alfalfa pellets and non-structural carbohydrate pellets, as well as 3/4 of a flake of imported grass hay, twice a day (12 lbs. feed and 1.5 flakes a day) He is also getting 5 mg Bute paste. I personally don’t think he’s being fed enough.
I am concerned because the horse had been dewormed a week ago ( 5 day oral paste treatment). He was found positive for worms and had been losing weight. He also has what is believed to be foundered front hooves. He has the extended growth lines/ridges on the walls of his hooves. He was recently on green pastures and his owner says this is the cause. However, the horse has been off green pasture for about a month and I have not seen any improvement in his condition. He is not putting on weight and looks very hungry when I come to feed him twice a day. He largely ignores the alfalfa pellets and goes straight for the NSC pellets. His hip bones are showing as well as his ribs. His owner is a very old man and his frugality is also hindering the horse’s condition. His owner’s response is along the lines of “well he’s old and on his last legs anyway.” Even so, I want to see this horse living healthy and pain free for the rest of his days.
I am concerned about his weight loss. If he is supposed to be on a restricted carbohydrate diet, I think his owner could be feeding him the wrong foods; the horse also gets about an apple a day. I am trying to introduce kale and cabbage but the horse doesn’t seem to like how they taste. Believe me, if I could take him to the vet, buy him padded shoes, and adjust his diet, I would. but I don’t have authority OR money to do get an independent consultation at another vet. I’m trying to walk him but he seems hesitant to cross pavement (a walking area is across a 7 food driveway). Does anyone have any suggestions for trying to get the big guy to gain some healthy weight and put on muscle mass? I’m worried about him.
believe me folks, If I could take him to the vet, I would.
Edit: he was confirmed positive for worms THEN he was put on dewormer. This is his first time on this brand this year I believe. Sorry about the clarification issue ![]()
First and foremost, the man is not a “nut job”. He’s 90. He lost his wife mid-january and got into a car accident 9 days later… he is in a wheelchair and the horse is the only one left of the four he’s had over the past 40 years. It was his wife’s horse. He was going to put the horse down because he couldn’t care for him, but he knew this was not the answer so he found me.
The horse was diagnosed with foundered hooves and I do not have access to his xrays. His hooves are not hot, he’s thin but not starving, and he is not under abuse. He is outdoors on firm but cushony ground.
secondly, kale and cabbage from my garden have many important trace metals and minerals; some of which his diet is most likely lacking in. He’s not able to be put to pasture yet because the grass is still too green and he has allergies. It is in no wish of mine that the horse be moved from the only home he’s had. a diet change seems most appropriate, as does a few calls to local vets.
